Luckily, kidney infections during pregnancy are easily treatable. Cephalexin, ampicillin, and nitrofurantoin are few examples of antibiotics that are used to treat urinary tract infections, kidney infections, bladder infections and cystitis in pregnant women.  You can take these medications in the pill or tablet form. Although, pregnant women can consider taking prescription medications, these antibiotics can keep the mother and baby safe.  In many cases of non-pregnant women, urinary infections occur in the urethra, bladder and kidneys (pyelonephritis). This infection is due to the formation of bacteria and other infection-causing microorganisms in the vaginal and anal areas. These bacteria spread upward through the urinary system and kidney.

When a woman is infected in the kidney (pyelonephritis), there should be a proper treatment with hospitalization and antibiotics.  Pregnant women with pyelonephritis infection can take cephalosporin class, or gentamycin antibiotics. Or you can also take acetaminophen (Tylenol) if fever is present. Take these after consulting a doctor.

The excellent choice of antibiotics for Kidney infections in pregnant women is prognosis. If pyelonephritis is left untreated in pregnant women, there is a chance of maternal and fetal complications, causing infants to be born in premature labor and low birth weight.
